BRAZIL

Amazon Rainforest region

The dripping humidity of the Amazon rainforest’s interior created a hazy circle around Roman and Madison as their transport automatically navigated the narrow roads leading to the site of the logging incident.

Despite centuries of humans literally ripping up the terrain from its roots, the rainforest still protected more than 15,000 species of trees, from the hardy palm with its umbrella cover fronds, to the bounty of the rubber leaking latex into industrial bins bound for distant factories…and left to the monkeys, macaws, and jaguars once again. As the transport maneuvered off the road and into the forest, both men instantly felt the deafening silence close in on them as they disappeared under the trees.

Rio de Janeiro

…we crossed into South America, heading straight across the shockingly dense trees of the Amazon jungle to land on the beaches of Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil…

Brazil’s beating heart was a mega-city in the world’s most spectacular setting. Most famous for a boundless beachfront that followed the curvature of Guanabara Bay slithering between a line of apartment block skyscrapers and the green top mountains defined by one called Sugar Loaf, Rio was instantly recognizable. And universally envied, for a displayed lifestyle of beach playing leisure where gorgeous people ignored the travails of everyday life in a captured harmony of sun and body worship.

“…just by being in Rio, cidade maravilhosa, the marvelous city, all the previous cares disappeared as one’s body instantly reacted to a new calm. “Ok, look around.” I lifted my arm in a sweeping gesture that took in the tips of the mountains, the skyscrapers of the streets behind us and the beach, the enduring symbol of Rio’s culture before us. “See the people, the Cariocas, they are every color and economic group and you do not know who is who. And here on the beach, culturally they know that they can go as skimpy as possible and while body shape is admired, if you want to let it hang out, it hangs out…The beach pulsated with volleyball players, snack sellers and gawkers from lands far away. “These are the most beautiful people in the world..

…[at the] top of Corcovado mountain to a [statue] of [Jesus Christ] that had been comforting locals and awing tourists for decades. “O Cristo Redentor, Christ the Redeemer…here providing in its outstretched embrace coverage of peace for these multi-colored masses of poor and rich basking in your endless sun…I love it up there. It’s one of the greatest views in the world…to the top of Corcovado and joined the tourists shuttling to the base of the statue. Lingering for several minutes, looking up at this 100-foot high depiction, I was cast in wonder…

…Rio seeing the sunlight bounce off the sands onto the many hued glorious bodies on its beaches as the twisting curves of the hills painted a lasting backdrop to the city’s essential glamour. We crossed out into western Brazil and across the Amazon jungle. Glancing down I saw the falls at Iguazu

On all sides were the attractive cariocas, the citizens who defined Rio de Janeiro so freely. The Copacabana beach area in Brazil’s second largest city contained every color of human, every sound of joy, the smells of Latino cooking, the rock of ocean waves, the bounce of screaming delight.

The heat, hordes, and confusion created a perfect setting for Zylen’s plan…
