UNITED STATES
New York City
…buildings forming a wall of glass and steel to frame that stunning lady with a torch that protected its mythical gates. Circling the Statute of Liberty on our approach, we moved up through the spine of the island of Manhattan, then were delivered between the lanes of the scattered joggers encircling the reservoir in New York City’s Central Park.
Industry? – yes, commerce? – yes, skyscrapers, art museums, fine restaurants all of it. But that American blue print does not have New York’s hustle, its pounding pace of movement on objectives, its symbolic lifting of the limited and the disconnected. I think if you asked which one they would choose to preserve, this would be it – New York in all its anger and glory.”
New York, from the Upper East Side and in any direction, was no one single look. The locals were as likely to be the tourists as vice versa. A combination of sincere shoppers, earnest sightseers and pushy bustle trying to advance, combined with the gently gliding artist and the irritated investment banker. They lived right up against one another in brownstones and glass high-rises and tenements, in poverty, for those occupying their great-grandmother’s legacy, and in wealth for those with their name on the front of the building. And they lived in-between.
“New York is the symbol of the pursuit of wealth that built America,” I began. “They flash it and hide it here…New York sparkles beneath a brick and cement stance of prosperity and it flashes green against the homeless, peddlers and buskers of its sidewalks. This is one of the places that people come to – shaded, fast, brimming with talent, ready to do business everywhere with anyone at any time…
…Coming to a stop at Rockefeller Center, we encircled the bronze statue of Atlas permanently holding up the heavens on his shoulders as punishment for having being on the wrong side of a war. We were continuing to walk down Fifth Avenue on a southern trajectory through the city.
At Union Square, we cut across the park onto Broadway and continued in the direction of downtown. We had passed all manner of New York City images. Hot dog sellers, spike-haired students, ballet dancers, camera-toting tourists, all swept up in a density of commerce and habitation that had no equal…Having reached the south end of Manhattan by stepping into Battery Park…
– Describing New York City in Walking with J by Karsten Quarters
Place: The United States of America, the world’s biggest economy, third largest geography, third largest population, and the America, of the North American continent
Visited: My home country. Have visited 45 of the 50 states, and Puerto Rico, and will be posting separate pages for each one and many of the major cities.
Most Recent Visit: Home base
Original sites: Overwhelming: From historical to uniquely American kitsch, pick a region and go from there.
Familiarity: High
Surprise: The range of prices, even within the same city, people pay to be shopping in a particular neighborhood, you can get the same products for less money if you are willing to move around.
For Rising Entrepreneurs in Business: In the U.S., you get your competitive game on. The size and wealth of the population makes it possible to launch a product or service, and find a niche willing to try it out. People enjoy being ‘ahead of the Joneses” which means if you have a creative idea, you have an edge.

Reading Recommendations
The U.S. has a thriving book industry with titles covering the American experience in all its forms. My favorite is Rick Telander’s Heaven is Playground showcasing the quest for glory that begins in the poverty-stricken neighborhoods of the inner city.
