When I was once there during the Flower Festival, you could walk around a corner and hear children singing along the banks of the Dnieper, it was beautiful. But when I went to buy bread from a vendor operating out of a window she just scowled at me. Her face basically said that she could not believe that she was selling bread to tourists. I did not know if it was the possible meagerness of the wages, for the baguette was really cheap, or a perceived unworthiness of labor, but she personified unhappiness in what was supposed to be the country’s era of reawakening. Bread was excellent though, the kind you end up lining up for again…
