…the low-rise roofs of Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic…landing with unconscious subtly in the Old Town Square…“This is a beautifully preserved city. I can never tell if all of these stone and wood structures have been rebuilt since the last war or if it’s the original, either way they’ve done a lovely job.”
We came to stand in front of the square’s astronomical clock tower, where on the hour the doors opened and the chimes began. We looked up with the tourists to see this particular doll-size imagining of [Jesus Christ] leading a procession of the disciples followed by a skeleton of death around in a circle that passed from out of the clock, in front of us all, and back inside to await the next hour. “I love that,” I joyfully remarked while pointing up at the once again closed doors of the clock face. “It’s ingenious. I’ve not seen anything like it anywhere else in the world.”
Walking towards the Charles Bridge to cross the Vltava River with the tourists and hucksters, we strolled slowly taking time to gaze upon the statutes of the 30 saints erected to line the railings on either side of this most iconic of city crossings.
Over the bridge, we followed Mostecká Street to St. Nicholas Cathedral on the Malá Strana side of the city, then continued up the hill to Prague Castle and into the neighborhood called Hradc̆any. Prague was one of the world’s best walking cities, the streets and lanes had staircases for the steeper hills. The classic buildings contained coffee houses and boutique shops. A timeless energy permeated from the stone and into the sky beyond.
As we stood in the hills looking down into a city whose landmarks were grand churches…
