Port of Spain

…over the Caribbean Sea passing the crescent of islands that form the eastern barrier to the glorious turquoise waters that were the backdrop to the best of vacation photos…the islands

…in Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain, the capital of the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. A waft of settled cleansing passed over us both as we relaxed into the warm air, back in time in the Caribbean.

“Lovely,” I said aloud as the sweet mix of West Indian flair and spice reached us from the edge of the park. Trinidad and its sister island Tobago were the last Caribbean island stops as one traveled south from the United States to South America. Here the British left African, Indian, Chinese and indigenous labor to form a culture that swooned to calypso, made love to the beat of the steel drum, honored every religious holiday and never missed its cricket. This was the soft, bouncy, energetic Caribbean played out with steady hands and unbreakable cultural and family ties. Here the people’s faces reflected every influence and the language lilted through that English that speaks for that other island so far away.

…we left the city to cut across the northwest arm of the island. Stopping at a roadside vendor to pick-up the area’s uniquely own fast food, shark and bake, shark meat inside a bun, eaten like a hamburger, we made our way to the water’s edge at Maracas Beach. Nibbling on our snack, feeling so comfortably warm and laid-back, we walked directly into the inviting water.  The turquoise waters were beckoning at our toes as our walk traversed the line between sea and sand….I reverted to our appreciation for where we currently found ourselves. We had stopped to inhale the salt sea air and watch the locals and tourists snuggling under the sun…
