Agra
…and descended into the city of Agra in India. “Of all the world’s great devotional buildings, maybe this one is the most admired because the story is, it was built for pure human love.” We stood facing the marble wonder that was the Taj Mahal. Despite the propensity of India through its crush of people, to pulse, wrack and beat every inch of one’s senses, the Taj was recognized with such reverence that – I dared to say – it did not feel crowded here…
A building like no other on earth, a marble architectural triumph decorated in precious gemstone built with a sentiment that was universally recognized even if rarely achieved…so much love that you…build an extraordinary tomb the entire world wants to see. A tomb that is still standing after 350 years, that is so unique compared to all other structures around the world. Emperor Shah Jahan was not the only rich Mughal emperor or king or mega-company CEO who ever lived. But this is what he wanted for his beloved wife…This is the core of timeless love songs, telenovelas and Hollywood romance movies. I do not know anything else about Shah Jahan, but this, well this makes him some kind of fabulous guy…
Following the other tourists, we walked slowly into the Taj wanting to embrace every second that we were there…look closely at the intricate shapes of pietra dura, gemstone designs, laid out in the walls… I ran my fingers across an embedded flower, “I’m amazed by this,” I said softly in admiration of a long-forgotten artist. “I’m sure the workers did not get to live in the kind of luxury they created…
We had followed the crowds through and out of the tomb and into the steaming sun…Wandering through the tomb gardens on either side of a long rectangular pool that captured the reflection of the building on its surface, we made our way to the limited shade where families stood to take pictures in front of the Taj. Settling on one edge of a wall, we continued to watch the facade of the building to see the changing colors of the monument as the sun began to set…
