Victoria Falls (Livingstone)
I heard a pounding rush of water. Then I saw the lush green below us that marked the Zambezi River’s descent over the spectacular Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya, as it was called in the Kololo language of the people living on the borders of this wonder in southern Africa, the smoke that roars. The scattered water and land pathway of the river took us to this dramatic break in the earth…we could see the curtain of mist rising from the cascade of water over a cliff dropping some 100 meters down into a basalt gorge, a display of natural motion that transcended man’s vision…
…on a patch of dry land right at the lip of the falls, at inches from plunging over the side. “Whoa,” I shouted this time as I instinctively stepped back and fell to my knees to avoid the unbalanced sensation of standing up straight…I gasped for breath, hesitating only a second more. Then I steeled my nerves and dropped flat onto my stomach, gingerly crawled back to the edge. I reached out and gripped the dirt curve of the land and then slowly, very slowly, leaned forward to peer over the side and saw the sight of the spigots of the falls. The sound of the water pounded back up towards me…hovering over a 330-foot plunge…taking advantage of the opportunity to stand in the middle of the Zambezi River, at the top of this beautiful waterfall and appreciate the seamless spectacle of the marvels of a vibrant earth…birds soaring overhead and the deep green foliage of the islands that formed throughout the river during this time of year…
I stood up and took my toes to the top of the world’s widest waterfall. I stood for a couple of minutes, maybe seconds… I briefly closed my eyes, listening to the water, surrendering to faith, encasing my mind for as long as I could in the absolute stillness around me.
…we walked across openings of dry land to return to the riverbank then found a path that led us through the paved rainforest to where tourists normally gathered. We emerged out onto the Knife Edge Bridge. The elevation dropped us down to face the water’s plunging descent at a lower and closer view where we could be drenched in its spray. The true moisture of the water did not penetrate us. I did not feel cold or hot, but the sensation of it enveloped me. Here there was no sense of the greater battling world beyond. The river and the falls naturally protected themselves from the descending interlopers who may have sought to disrupt their existence. Along the walkways, reaching out to touch the water as it fell, we were completely enrobed… “This is the very definition of a natural wonder, this is a passion all its own…
Working our way through the Falls Park into the town of Livingstone in Zambia, we emerged onto the dusty streets of the area that served as the spot from which tourists from around the world with money to spend went on their way to see the Falls. But the country itself, land-locked Zambia did not directly reflect their disposable income as it continued in its struggling existence.
…Since the pace of life never falters in the tropical heat, we could not help but walk more slowly through the villages, not because it was affecting us directly but because we dropped into the rhythm of the people around us. Our feet melted into the sandy roads, we drifted through the thick air…
