SOUTH AFRICA

Capetown

Below us the landscape changed into the weathered plains of the South African veld, then led us directly to the edge of the continent to the most hopeful of African cities, Capetown, South Africa. A breath of joy pervaded…No shortage of poverty cloaks every African city but in Capetown as the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet within sight of Table Mountain, in its merry mix of culture and color, here was what a new developed Africa could be.

“South Africa is the hope of the continent,” I declared…on the top of Table Mountain, the city’s signature flattop peak, to admire the stunning views. “If South Africans can build and maintain a prosperous, integrated, democratic country, then every other nation on the continent could follow their lead….They have everything here – such a beautiful country, so many resources…

Ignoring the mountain’s cable car, we descended from the peak via one of its hiking trails, acknowledging the more intrepid tourists who chose to be enveloped in its folds. We wandered among them down to the coast then followed the town and suburban roads towards the city center. He stopped to look solemnly towards Robben Island, across shark-infested Table Bay to the site where former President Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in captivity.

…we turned and found our way to the busy Victoria and Alfred waterfront to roam among the shops and restaurants of the outdoor mall. Pleasure boats bobbed against the piers and lights began to twinkle along the triangle rooftops of the low-lying buildings. Capetown’s ethnically mixed locals ate seafood and sushi, Indian curries and hamburgers while watching their children and gossiping about the day’s events.

…In this part of South Africa, it appears that all Africans mingle in a more balanced mix of the country’s diversity. Somehow, perhaps restrained by the sea and lulled by the quiet beauty of its atmosphere, Capetown does not rumble. There is opportunity and there is optimism in this one particular edge of this incredible continent.”

The always-on sunshine of a Cape Town day welcomed Slater and Maltine as their private jet landed at the South African city’s international airport. The preserved multi-colored harmony of the united city’s people was warmly enchanting, tempting Maltine to succumb to their charms, and to blend into their peace. If only she had come to sip the wines in Stellenbosch, lie on the beach at Camps Bay, and admire the view from the end of Africa.

*

…At the appointed hour, Slater was relieved when he noticed the Bash sisters elbowing through the crowds at the busy Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

Sellers were hawking tourist trinkets, while exotic food smells, stretching from the influences of the Mediterranean through Africa to the Americas, permeated the air, and left nostrils puffing out under the allure. The sea breeze worked to entice a yearning for quiet days, as a variety of personal yachts loomed nearby, bouncing on the shark-infested waters of the South Atlantic Ocean….
