SENEGAL
The waters holding the mangrove forests in the Sine-Saloum Delta in the West African nation of Senegal are warm, clear and a vital lifeline for busy cultivators all around the region. In this area, low flat wooden boats called pirogues ply the tranquil, blue water as hands reach into the thick leaves to pick oysters for personal consumption and trade. Buckets and buckets of oysters.
The entrepreneurs in this region rely on nature to provide the key input for their business, the oysters. But the rest is their own work. They bring the boats, buckets, and manual labor to manage a production line that begins in the delta and ends on someone’s dinner plate.
When delivering a product or service for market, every entrepreneur must consider the factors for production, including the ‘capital,’ used to make the business function. In Sine-Saloum, the factors have changed little in decades – wooden boats, metal knives and buckets, human hands. Yet each piece, as simple as it seems, is vital to ensuring the business process functions. Each entrepreneur involved in oyster cultivation must ensure the pieces work correctly. The boat, implements and hands must be perfectly balanced to select the number of oysters needed to earn income to cover all costs, and a profit to purchase necessities.
